The more popular poker gets, the more people play the game. Now, if that statement sounded like the biggest "well, duh!" comment that you've heard in a long time, it is because you are clearly paying attention and using your common sense. If that is the case, then perhaps you can answer this question: "Is Texas Holdem for Dummies?"
Let us take a moment to explain - in order to pull off elaborate bluffs in poker you often have to put in a great deal of effort, sometimes stretching over many hands or even many hours. The problem is that the game of Holdem is so full of non expert players that they will likely not fall for your bluffs. It's a true statement to say that the more complex a bluff, the more immune a donkey is to it.
Does that mean that the smartest players, defined as those who could make the best bluffs, are out of luck? No - because the smartest players recognize that their smarts are better put to other uses than running complicated bluffing sessions. If you find yourself playing at a table with loose and aggressive players who will call down anything, that means you are sitting at a table full of people who are making a lot of mistakes. The irony is that the best player will revert to the simplest of poker strategies in this situation, namely waiting for the good hands before entering the pot and letting the math take care of the rest.
So while you may despair when you get called down and bad beaten, stop before you start the complaining about your opponents.
