WSOP Champion Unchanged by Big Win
16th 2006f May 2006
According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, Australia's gift to poker, Joe Hachem, remains unchanged from what amounts to a $10 million AUD windfall. Hachem, the first Aussie to win the coveted World Series of Poker's Main Event, took home $7.5 million American dollars in 2005, which he gets to keep tax free due to a fluke in Australian hobby tax law.
Hachem says he treats his poker playing as a business and enjoys the travel, but has not followed up on any plays to leave Australia to move to Nevada. He has mentioned the possibility of a second home in Las Vegas, but so far has not committed to a move.
