Wisconsin State Poker Games Go On Uncontested

If more players knew they were risking more than their $20 buy in to participate in a Texas Hold’em poker tournament, they might think twice; as much as $1000 more. That is the fee that someone convicted of taking part in illegal gambling could pay, along with spending up to 9 months in jail. The very popular tournaments are technically illegal, although the players, club owners and even the county prosecutors don’t seem in a hurry to enforce the law.
According to La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne there are a few elements that have to be present for a game for illegal gambling: prize, a cost to participate, and chance. Unless there are complaints about the games that go on, Horne and his team of prosecutors leave them be.
Establishment owners can face even stiffer penalties, including up to 15 years in jail. It is evident that the enforcement of the gambling laws is not taken seriously due to the increasing popularity of the game.
