Texas Poker Runs May Be Illegal
29th of December 2005
Bad news for charity minded bikers in the state of Texas; there may be no more poker runs in 2006. In a recent ruling Attorney General Greg Abbott said that poker runs were just the same thing as illegal gambling and must stop. Specifically he was speaking of those poker runs where cash prizes were handed out. This makes them akin to a lottery, said Abbot, which make them against Texas law.
Poker runs are popular events where bikers make stops along a specific route, having fun and drawing poker cards along the way. At the end of the run they see who has the best poker hand, and the winner gets a prize. With entry fees gathered from all participants, it is a great way to make money for charity.
As long as future poker runs avoid cash prizes, however, they may be allowed to continue.
