Poker Pays For College Tuition

Jeremy Olisar won’t have to worry about his college tuition this fall, thanks to his skill at cards. By winning a poker tournament, this Carnegie Mellon University student gets his bill paid by online poker room AbsolutePoker.com. Olisar, 21, will receive a check this month covering the fall tuition, about $15,000.
Thanks to his final place finish in the "Win Your Tuition" online poker tournament in October, Olisar can focus on studies instead of the bill. The student from Naperville, Ill, beat opponents from over 300 colleges in the free No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament, and stuck it through the more than five-hour final table.
"We want to create customer loyalty and brand recognition, and college players are the fastest growing segment of online poker participants," Michael Edwards says. "But we're also a young company, and not too separated from the years when Ramen noodles and Kraft dinners were our main meals."
Edwards is the business development manager for AbsolutePoker.com, which took care to support the goals behind the tuition prize with rules for the winners. Olisar must be in good scholastic standing with CMU, prove he is enrolled, and be able to produce proof of fees for tuition and books. As he is a 4.0 student, he won’t have a problem getting his check.
