Owner of Online Poker Site Cleared
29th 2006f June 2006
It seemed like an innocent enough arraignment: Bernie Fernandez Jr. hired on Troy Smith to pass out flyers for an employment website owned and operated by Fernandez for a little summer money. Neither man knew that such an arraignment would cause so much trouble. Smith, a quarterback at Ohio State University, was warned by the school to end affiliation with Fernandez, who also owned and ran a poker themed website, pokertopia.com. The school was concerned that Smith may pass on information that Fernandez could use to wager regarding college sports.
Fernandez's home was raided by police, who seized computers, credit cards and business records, hurting his operations for as much as eight months before Fernandez was cleared of any wrongdoing.
