New Zealand Follows Suit In Poker
21st 2005f November 2005
With Australian Joseph Hachem winning a prize purse of $7.5 million in the United States World Series of Poker competition, and Jamil Dia of Wellington winning $1 million at the Australian Poker Championship in Melbourne last January, it didn’t seem that it would be long before neighboring New Zealanders would get the itch to play a little Texas Hold’em poker. It is no surprise, then, that the casino operators in New Zealand would move to open poker rooms to capitalize on the game.
At SkyCity. Auckland a place has been opened; the Poker Zone, a room just for playing poker, including No Limit Texas Hold’em.
"Demand for poker is huge – our customers want it here," said gaming general manager Greg Hawkins.
Similar Poker Zone type poker rooms will be opened in SkyCity in its Hamilton and Queenstown casinos.
