Joe Hachem Will Give Out Half Of His Winnings
05th 2005f August 2005
This year’s World Series of Poker champion Joseph Hachem from Canada took to his homeland about $10,000,000.
However, there’s a big possibility that he will say goodbye to about half of this sum.
The fact is that when he received the money, he told journalists that he was going to find out whether he should pay taxes from his winnings. And it turned out to that in case the Taxation Institute of Australia proves he has won the money being a professional player, he will have to give out 47 per cent of his winnings which is about $4.7 million.
Joe made his position even less stable when he said that he had taught himself many poker strategic movements and succeeded in training himself to keep poker face in any situation. These words can make it easier for taxmen to prove that his game was a professional one.
Nevertheless, Joe keeps smiling.
"That's something that's out of my hands, really. It's between [Tax Commissioner Michael] Carmody and my accountant and they can work it out together," he said in one of the interviews.
