Irish Gambling Billboards Pulled
07th 2005f October 2005
In Ireland a billboard depicting an offensive religious scene raised the ire of many, prompting the promoter who commissioned the advertisement to pull it down. Paddy Power PLC, Ireland’s largest bookmaker, withdrew an advertising campaign that plastered a depiction of Jesus and his disciples sitting at the Last Supper table, playing poker and roulette. The billboard sported the slogan, “There’s a place for fun and games.”
Nearly ninety billboards were replaced with new Paddy Power signs in response. The new slogan read “There’s a place for fun and games. Apparently this isn’t it.” Paddy Power had said their choice of settings for their slogan made sense, because the Last Supper was “absolutely the most inappropriate place ever for fun and games.”
